John Klopke, CPPS


John Robert Klopke, CPPS entered new life August 26, 2003 at St. Charles Center in Carthagena, OH. The Vigil service will be held at St. Charles on Monday September 1st with the Funeral Liturgy celebrated at 2:00pm on Tuesday September 2nd.

John was born in Chicago, IL January 8, 1928. He entered the Missionaries of the Precious Blood at Collegeville, IN August 31, 1945. He was Incorporated into the Missionaries of the Precious Blood December 3, 1948 and ordained to the priesthood June 4, 1953.

Klopke’s early ministry was at St. Joseph College, Rensselaer, IN 1955-71 where he served as Associate Professor, Assistant Academic Dean and Chair of the Philosophy Department. His PhD was completed at the University of Toronto in 1961.

Klopke transferred to the Pacific Province of the CPPS community in 1971 where he served as Associate at St. Barnabas in Alameda, Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi in East Palo Alto, and Administrator of St. Edward Parish, Newark, CA.

In 1985 Fr. Klopke moved to Rome where he served the community as General Secretary and General Councilor. When he returned to the province he served as Provincial Secretary 1990-98. Most recently he was Director of the Province Center in San Leandro until he retired in June 2003.

Fr. Klopke’s publications include the St. Joseph People Catechism (1979, 1987) and the Summary: Catechism of the Catholic Church (1994) published by Catholic Book Publishing. John is also the author of two volumes of essays in honor of St. Gaspar del Bufalo published by Messenger Press (1992, 93) A third volume was published in electronic format. His most recent work was a translation of Mario Spinelli’s life of St. Gaspar del Bufalo, No Turning Back, Messenger Press, 2003.

Fr. John Klopke is remembered by local parishioners and Precious Blood Companions as a “sweet and gentle soul.” Maria Elena Byron of the Newark Companion group reports, “He became very animated when talking about his favorite subject, St. Gaspar del Bufalo. Hearing him talk about Gaspar was sitting at the feet of a great story teller--he could really engage you and bring you right back to the times and life of Gaspar.”
